Being able to be non-attached to specific media, styles, and personal work I'm able to stand back and see the nasty opinions and behaviors of those in the art world. I have an egalitarian approach to artists, art, and the art-making process and thus I respect all forms of art.
Here's a fun list of art snobbisms I collected and hope we all can reflect on our viewpoints and come together as artists and support each other rather than promote derision.
Snobbisms; a smugly superior and dismissive viewpoint expressed about perceived inferior art or art related issues. A snob is “one who affects an offensive attitude of self-satisfied superiority in matters of taste or intellect.”
"True artists don’t use photographs.”
“True artists know how draw”
“True artists know how to draw the human body”
“True artists have exhibitions or awards”
“It’s is not art if it sells”
“It’s not art unless it is in a gallery”
“it is not art if it is a reproduction (giclee or lithograph).”
"It's not art if it doesn't have a story to tell."
"It's not art if it's pretty." or "It's not art if it's ugly."
"It's not art if it's derivative."
“It’s only art if it doesn't sell.”
“Real art makes a statement” or “It’s only art if it makes a political statement”
“Abstract art is not art”
“Representational art is not art”
"Photography is not art"
“Oil painting is the true medium of artists”
“True artists have an art degree.”
“Owning a paint brush doesn’t make you an artist”
“It is not art unless it was created through a refined process.”
“Photographers are not artists”
"Film is better than Digital photography"
"Smartphone photos are not photography"
“Digital art is not art”
“Digital art is not valuable."
“There is Art and then there is Fine Art”
“My art is better than that”
“Don’t talk about art unless you can use the proper terminology”
“Sunday Painters are not artists.”
“If you're not making art full time then it's a hobby.
“Decorative Arts is not art.”
This is just a silly list of viewpoints. There also exist a list of snobbish behaviors...
So the lesson to learn here is don’t be a jerk and keep your imperative declarations to yourself unless you can express it in a softer tone and in a tone of personal preference.
